I went hunting 3 weeks back at a farm up on the Botswanan border. Went with a few mates and quite a lot of animals were on order for the freezer.

The first morning showed just how hard the hunting was going to be. The bush was thick, and the grass was long. Didn't take a genius to realise that careful stalking was going to be required, and though I could hear the bush rustling, I went hours without seeing anything. Though I was looking for some impala and a wildebeest, I soon realised that the name of the game would be shoot whatever you see. I shot a nice warthog last year, and had enjoyed the salami, cabanossi and russians. So I figured if I saw a nice piggie, into the cooler he/she would go.

The tracker then motioned that there was something across in a clearing. Took me a bit to see what he was pointing at, and I saw a nice sow around 130m away. I took aim, squeezed the 9,3 X 62 and banged off a shot. The warthog took off at pace, and the tracker said casually "Miss". I was pissed. Not to be arrogant, but I don't hunt recklessly, and I have never missed before.

I ran hell for leather after it, and about 150m later I saw another sow come in from the other side. As she stopped, I dropped her where she was standing. When I got to her though, I got a shock as I saw 2 pigs lying 1m away from each other. Had I got a rare fluke and shot two with one round?

Then I realised what had happened. I had not missed my first pig after all, and when she ran and dropped (long grass so I didn't see it), the other piggie must have run in to see what was going on with her, and got dropped for her efforts. Not big sows, but nice nonetheless (both had carcass weights of 21kg). Took to Sloane Meat Market in Bryanston - best cabanossi and cheese grillers I have ever had. Kids can't eat often nor fast enough.

Here is a pic taken back at the house. I thought my first sow had fairly good tusks?
