Big Bore building project: Building a .500 Jeffery on a Mod 98 Mauser action.
Good day to all members.
I decided to commence with another rifle build. I decided on a .500 Jeffery rifle that will double as a hunting rifle and a Big Bore shooting rifle.
There will not be a time frame on this build. I will use any spare-time available while busy with work in the gunsmith shop. This build will be with the guidance and permission of Johan Greyling my mentor and good friend .
What do I have :
A Mod 98 Mauser action.

A Turkish Walnut blank
What do I still need:
A Lothar Walther barrel.
Re-loading dies
Brass
My planning:
Blue printing the action.
Build a drop box magazine to fit three rounds
Build a compact heavy stock
Build a v-express quarter rib
Build a front sight with flip up hood and night sight
Build a Buffalo horn grip cap.
My aim is to build a dangerous game rifle that will fit me perfectly.
I will upload any progress with a description of the processes involved. This will be a fun project and a learning curve for me. Input from members will be welcomed.
Gert

Thank you kindly members, keep in mind this process has some difficult issues I need to resolve...making a .500 Jeffery feed is one of the most difficult endeavors to embark on but it is possible...limited time since this will be done in spare time available...any progress will be uploaded as time permits. :t:

Gert do you have pics of the Turkish Walnut blank? Which grade are you using?

I've considered asking my friend who works for a manufacturer to build me a nice rifle (from scratch, possibly even the action), but sadly the costs are pretty high.
It still remains a really nice project.

Go on Gert!
You can do it!

Can't wait for this one, if it's anything like the 375H&H build it's going to be epic!
Gert quick one, I can't remember if you actually finished the 375H&H build as in the last final touches because I'm sure you mentioned there was one or two things you wanted to change?

dsmerrills , I still need to plane the piece of rifle stock blank...I got it from another person, one of those things where you are at the right place at the right time. At this stage I myself need to take a look at the grain pattern and try to assert what type of grade it is..all I know it is really heavy , so the wood is extremely dense....as soon as I put it through the machine will I be able to know what the wood looks like..
