CFR's IT contract cost woes.
It is reported in the Beeld today that SAPS informed Parliament that the planned cost for the setup and maintenance of the Firearms Control IT software system of R92M has increased to R341M and that the system is nearly 70 months behind the scheduled handover and implementation date.
Re: CFR's IT contract cost woes.
seeing that an utter shit website cost them $40m, i wouldnt be surprised at R341m for a proper system.
Re: CFR's IT contract cost woes.
So then the obvious choice is to scrap the system with immediate effect...
Re: CFR's IT contract cost woes.
Wtf can you buy for that amount of money?
We use state of the art FT servers with build in fall over and what have you that cost R1000 000 each.
They will never be able to use 2 of those server to 80% of its capacity
Unless the custom (open source) software and SQl costs them R300 mil :sh:
R341miljin Randellas my fok man
Re: CFR's IT contract cost woes.
There would be a lot more costs involved with regards to other considerations, like all the branch offices, software development etc. The server room would probably only be a fraction of the cost.
Still freaking nuts though.
Re: CFR's IT contract cost woes.
Is it just me, or does the whole CFR (and therefore the FCA) seem to be crumbling (quite publicly) of late ?
The cynic in me can't help but feel this is where it was headed in any case, and hopefully (and it's a big hopefully) it will lead to a better system.
HAHA but ja. . .
Re: CFR's IT contract cost woes.
There is numerous hidden costs involved in any major project. Quick breakdown.
Server location.
Server room.
High Availability Fail over location and server room.
Servers at both locations.
Real-time replicating fibre SAN's
Developer costs.
Infrastructure costs at branch level.
possible increased "MPLS" connection to branches.
Generator and cooling costs (Including maintenance).
Security upgrades for Networks / firewalls and physical.
Interface development (might end up with Sharepoint or CRM)
Possible Network upgrade wrt Active Directory required - possible additional servers and licenses.
Software licenses.
SLA's with all parties (ISP, Facility, Developers etc.) involved for 3 to 5 years.
DR Site SLA with someone like Continuity SA.
All manpower involved hours calculated.
I can see why R341M is estimated. - R92M has been wasted already and they have a 70 month backlog to rectify.

True but what can that cost?
Capture data at shops > send data via diginet, adsl, wireless, fiber > Hosting facilities (unless they somme build their own data center) >servers, fiber switches, Hosted firewall, SAN, Fiber etc
Custom designed software will never on this green earth cost 20% of that budget.
and after all that the same thing will happen that happened when they centralized the vehicle License departments IT or what ever they called it... Switch on power...Nothing works
..

Ok Moomin broke it down a bit better
Re: CFR's IT contract cost woes.
Think of the cost savings in licencing the person. This is the argument we need to push
