My personal and private opinions:
Firstly, I don't see the gun ownership problems in South Africa as unique: we still posess, in my opinion, far greater firearm freedoms than many other (and much more sophisticated) nations.
Secondly, it does not help to get paranoid or hysterical about the issue. Our constitution still protects our right to life, and until that changes, I am not going to stress about it. We will continue the legal fight as required.
Thirdly, if the shit really does hit the fan: we will have far bigger problems than applying for a firearm licence. Being prepared for anything is never a bad quality, nor is continiously looking for loopholes to exploit.
