Re: The practicality of a scout rifle in South Africa.
My own idea of what would be the the ideal "scout rifle" (for me) like Ell Jefe proposed would be a bolt action in 7.62x 39, 16 inch barrel with a low power long eye relief optic. If I could find a way to make it work with detachable 5 round Saiga mags even better... because then I could also use 30 rounders or anything (even if cut down) in between.

Re: The practicality of a scout rifle in South Africa.
Or...
Something a bolt action in 300BLK, with a 14 / 16 inch barrel... and a short lightweight can. Without the can using supersonic ammo it can be usefull at distance.
With subsonic ammo and a can... probably as quiet as a Delisle carbine but much more accurate.
and one could probaly / with greater ease use 20 round AR mags with it.

Re: The practicality of a scout rifle in South Africa.
New CZ-600 Trail in x39 (Bren 2 10rnd mag) will work me.(Also in 223 AR mag compatible)
If I had deep pockets something like those Christensen BA tactical 16" in 308 that Europtics has a few of locally.(223 and 300blk)(No,I'm not associated with them.)
Otherwise something in 8.6BLK when that gets going as a first choice.

Hope this image comes through. This is a No 4Mk2 I had modified to form a semi-Scout rifle. Scope is a Leopold Scout Scope. The No1 MkIII is there for a size comparison.
