Default Ruger No. 1 .500 Nitro Express.

I recently had the opportunity to shoot a Ruger no 1, re-barreled to .500 Nitro Express. Despite the cartridge being quite powerfull (570gr bullet at 2150fps) and the rifle being rather light (9lbs) ant it wearing a typical Ruger ˝" recoil pad, it was not uncomfortable to shoot. I fired 4 shots without being left with any aches or bruises.
I would not like to try it from a bench though.

My mate has a beautiful Verney Carron double in .500NE that I shoot from time to time. You shoot this rifle standing.

You may find that as you fire more rounds the recoil effects compound and at about the 8 to 10 round mark it becomes a different story. During load development my friend fired 14 rounds in one session and came away with blurred vision and throbbing headache.

That's all the food groups in one meal! Must be a fantastic thing. If I had one it would be the last thing to be pried from my cold dead fingers.

That would be described as a 'stout' recoil

For interest I looked up Norma's max for URP for a 570gr bullet @ 2166fps which was 107.2gr. Looks like you'd get approx 60 rounds out of a bottle. Probably a good thing that it's not well suited to range plinking!
