I would not use a grease on a DI AR15. The best function and reliability results on DI ARs are achieved by floating the gas debris/carbon that is blown back onto the bolt carrier and into and on the bolt.

Grease is great for AKs and LMs and could work well on pistols in warm climates. On pistols I would choose a lube that does not run out of an EDC handgun, so higher viscosity and most definitely not any spray lubes because that will not stay in the gun when you EDC and it will quickly disappear when you really use the gun.

This article is very illuminating and nothing has changed on the way DI ARs operate and what is required to make them run smoothly for long times:

I'm not allowed to have a pistol for self defence so I'm not all that clued up on the greasing of them etc.

But I do hunt and have been using Pro Ferrum Oil for the last few years. I use it to clean my 308 and shotgun. Have cleaned guns for other people as well with it. It is a product from Germany and works a charm to prevent rust and keeps the bolt as smooth as anything that I've used. I ordered it from Germany because the UK won't post it.

Hi Bud, we are in the S.A., do we have winter?

from my understanding, all lubricating oils are composed of base oil, and plus additives. But because of different additives, oils have different properties.
For example, engine lubricating oil, in addition to lubricating, also has the function of absorbing impurities, and then filtering out impurities through a filter. But there is no filter on our firearm, which is why I don't recommend using engine oil on it, as without filiter, all of the dirts will be collected with oil and stay there...
Of course, it does not rule out short-term replacement when there is no other method.
fro grease oil, especially some famous brands and high-end products, use additives to gradually push these impurities to the edge (non-friction or lubricated area/parts) through their own friction and movement after absorbing impurities. --I have read this information in an introduction.

for myself, currently I have bought one liter gun oil for lubrication. believe it can be used for long long time. The main reason is that I don't have to remember to use different oils for each gun, just use one for all. Not the best solution, but at least the most efficient, for me.
