Re: The Fighter Ace from the Karoo - Petrus “Dutch” Hugo
His grave is close to the farm I've hunted at a few times. I've always wanted to take a day to go look for it but have never had that extra free day.
I first heard about him in the Deon Meyer & Coenie de Villiers production Karoonag, and then read up a bit. Sailor Malan is the really well-known South African WW2 pilot (to a degree because he really defined air combat to a science, hugely pissing off guys like Bader who insisted it's an art), but there were guys like Dutch Hugo that were excellent, without all the fame. For interesting reading, also go look up Pat Pattle.

Sailor Malan, Pat Pattle, Petrus Hugo & Douglas Bader were my childhood heroes.
Not only did Sailor Malan contribute to fighting doctrine & systems, the SAAF in WW2 were pioneers in ground attack fighting doctrine & techniques inventing what would later become the cab rank system used throughout the rest of the war against the Germans in the West.
