Pretty much this.

Caliber commonality is the solution. Commonality with armed forces and commonality with criminal forces. In ZA the criminal forces may have better reserves than our actual armed forces.

In our case the private security industry is another significant armed force and my perception is that the majority of their rifles are also in .556.

I know I sound pedantic now, and I get exactly what you meant (you meant 5.56 mm). But .556 would be one hell of a caliber for this role!

That depends. If male, then yes; very short. If female, then a bit too long.

Calibres descriptions like this are representations of diameter, or girth if you will.
