Default Strange Marking on Old Handguns

This strange marking has been seen on a revolver in South Africa, and on a pistol in England that originally belonged to a Boer. Both date from the period around 1880 to1900. The revolver has D 25 (the D was badly struck!) and the pistol D 29.

Has anyone seen the mark elsewhere?

    Thanks
    Peter

Peter, isn't that just a "Smuts number" stamped in a certain region at the time where they re-registered firearms in SA?
Speak to Andrew at Classic, he knows more about these.

No, definitely not. I am very familiar with the so-called Jan Smuts numbers, and the strange marking/emblem is completely new to me. Besides, it would be a hell of a coincidence if both the pistol and revolver had Somerset West JSNs; D was that magisterial district's code.
