When I was in the Army, many moons ago, we used "expired" Jet A1 (basically kerosene?) to clean our weapons. These ranged from pistols and rifles to much larger guns. The Jet A1 was poured into a suitable longish container and a little gun oil added. At the time we got Kal-Gard CLP in 20 litre drums. Guns were then soaked and scrubbed. All plastic furniture went in as well. The oil was added to prevent exposure of bare metal surfaces when the Jet A1 dried off.

I use diesel parafin mix to spray the my weapons out 2/3 times a year to get into all those places you can't get into.
Never had any issues.
