Default "AR" doesn't equal Assault Rifle?!

I thought we all in the gun community were one on this?!

AR was the prefix that Armalite added to all model numbers for guns they developed and didn't stand for 'assault rifle'. The AR-17 for example, was a shotgun. I'm not sure that 'assault rifle' was even a term when the AR-10 saw the light of day.

Especially seeing as it isn't one.

Does the term "assault rifle" have a fixed meaning, or particular history?

The Germans did have a "Sturmgewehr".

Unfortunately that is how IWI markets the FA on their website as well, don't understand why they didn't just market it as a "Bullpup Rifle" as that is exactly what it is.

As I have it the STG's were the first 'assault rifles'. The two primary criteria being an intermediate calibre chambering (8 kurz in it's case) as opposed to a full fat battle rifle one (e.g. the 8mm Mauser it was derived from) and select fire capability.

Being a bullpup doesn't stop it being an assault rifle but it still can't be an AR-xx.

Exactly how I had it until if found the above... FA manufacturers being their own worst enemy?

But does it turn into a "DR" when I use it for self Defence? Seems as if it only works one way...
