Default Loading .224 55gr SP for AR

    Greetings all,

Does anybody have experience or advice re the practicality of using a 224 SP bullet, like the Hornady 55gr, when loading for AR?

With their lead tips, might these bullets be more prone to jamming around the feedramps of a semi-auto and preferably be used in a bolt-action?

They work just fine, hang up more on plastic mags like Magpul, than the actual feed ramps. Aluminium mags work great.

Why do you want to use them, the FMJ versions are available at the same price.

Thought SP might make a better SD round.

    I can't speak for AR15 but I've used the SP's and FMJ's interchangeably in a mini-14 with no problems.

Do some research on the devastating wounds caused by FMJ 5.56 NATO. You won’t need soft points… welcome back Stan.

Consider twistrate as well when thinking about wounding with the FMJ's

Most sport shooters I know prefer the Fmj Boat tail. They claim the soft point might be more prone to damage on the ramp and in the magazine. Strangely enough, the fmj are more expensive most of the time. The boat tail makes reloading a bit easier also.

I loaded Sierra SP bullets for this purpose, but i chatted to a mate of mine in SAPS and he said a normal FMJ is devastating from what he has experienced and it makes sense at the speed that little bullet is traveling. There is a lot of energy being dumped in a target.

I've found that some of the exposed lead tips have deformed along the way.

I would consider loading something monolithic for that purpose.

It ought to be a bit more barrier blind. .223 sucks through barriers.
