One of the shooters in the Miami Dade shooting in the 80s used a mini 14 against the FBI agents. Really messed them up.

Interesting fact: many years ago I shot a shoot where competitors with LM4's shoot lollipop plates, rifle approved steel targets and there was no damage, but when I shot it my bullets caused a lot of damage. Same ammo and same distance.

With the same ammo and the same distance only impact velocity (due to barrel length) or maybe twist rate could cause a difference in damage to the plates and I really doubt whether twist rate will make much of a difference on steel plates.
If it was LM5's vs your mini-14 it would make sense but LM4's and mini-14's have barrels of similar length so velocities should be very similar.

Come to think of it years ago I went against an LM4 and my Mini 14 with the same ammo and experienced the same thing.
We put it down to us shooting old silhouette plates which were rather beaten up and put it down to that.
