Now I'll just have to buy a Mini-14 so that I can study this phenomenon. I've always needed a valid reason to get one, this seems to be it.

You will be a winner no matter which way the results go :))

I fully agree with you on the barrel length. The ammo was out of the same container and the other rifles were actually the R versions of a LM.
If you have yours then we can compare different Mini14 's vs a LM vs a AR.
Mine is a series 182. Stock standard with wooden stock, I just built a smaller gas port bushing. If you ever get a Mini14, stick to oem mags. My Mini14 is my go to rifle in 223.

Interesting about the gas port bushing. I had a stainless steel one made as well as a stainless piston.
I have not had issues with my mini 14 and it is my favourte as I like the streamlined profile and ease of use.
I agree with using OEM mags.

I once tried a Tapco stock. It looked "tactical and cool" but it didn't work for "her" or for me. Now I'm back to the standard wood furniture and now I'm happy and the gun also.
The smooth plastic butt plate, kept on slipping out of my shoulder, I stick some Genchem contact glue and let it dry (the glue stays sort of tacky with just enough grip).
Drilled the rear sight, peep hole open, to work more as a ghost ring sight.

I drilled mine out to 5mm according to my optom friend that will be optimal and going bigger will not be better.
I use a Choate stock that is neat and slim. The wood is great but to carry the rifle around the Choate folds up into a small package.

I'll have to check what size the hole in my sight is. But I would like to have the hole center n bit higher in the sight, I'm very close to the end of the adjustment thread.

    Anyone seen these available locally?

I'm struggling to get a comfortable sight picture and need to increase length of pull.
