Can't help wondering what constitutes army 'power' if SA is no.3 in Africa... clearly readiness and competence do not affect the weighting too much.

If Mcdonalds and KFC are the opposition, then we could live up to our ranking. But if the other guys have guns...

I'd wager that list will change greatly with the amount of modern Chinese tanks, APCs, SPG's etc being purchased

Hell even Zimbabwe now has vehicles with Thermals etc, while we running around in 45 year old Ratel 90s and 75 year old centurion chassis olifants

Modernization will leave SA far far behind

The only way we win are efficient militarily is the manufacture of certain military products such as Armored personnel carriers and MRAPs. In terms of military might we are however grossly inadequate. We underspend, undertrain and underpay. Kenya, for example, is adopting the SCAR-H as it's general issue service rifle (it's already issued to their special forces, along with the M4A1). Botswana has replaced it's FAL's and G3's with the SAR 21. We however are still stuck with the aging R4/R5 rifles (which we cannot even produce anymore under license since the Israelis revoked our license to do so due to cANCér's Hamas brownnosing). Our MBT is the Olifant, based on the obsolete Centurion, which would probably not be able to resist modern HEAT ammunition. Our air force's entire Gripen fighter fleet is apparently grounded due to lack of parts and qualified pilots.

In short, I call BS on this MS article and video. Number 3? I would ad a zero to that number.

If you count barrels, planes, tanks, etc you don't fully appreciate much about what constitutes military "power",this also ignores the fact that the gear is only as good as the guy operating it.

    What is far more important?

I'll leave out a few obvious ones like EW, comms systems, etc which is based on equipment again. Soft skills that count and have more relevance would be the quality of the troops/ leadership, command control systems, intel, training, tactics, strategy, morale/motivation,a proper adaptable and very flexible functioning logistics system, equipment servicability %,the ability to treat and evacuate the wounded(under fire), etc etc.

How many armies on these "lists' can actually project their "power",and not just internally?

Can they get their forces to a/any fight where and when they are needed, supply / sustain them and then extract them as needed, etc?

SA certainly will FAIL on almost all counts.

Our military cannot be capable as it is lead by people deployed from the glorious liberation movement. Every other organization lead by people pulled from the same pot are very deep in the shit. The idea that the SANDF has, for some unique set of reasons, turned out differently strikes me as wilfully naive.

But but, they select a few special junior staff officer comrades every year to go attend the very esteemed and world renowned Che Guevara Military Academy in Cuba to teach them everything they need to know about revolutionary warfare n stuff.

Who needs the likes of a West Point or a Sandhurst or any number of others?
