How do you gouge the magnesium?

Trial and error made me think of using something to collect the shavings as well. I'll give it a bash and see how it goes!

Maybe gouge is the wrong word. What i mean is that instead of just running the striker over the magnesium to create sparks, you put the striker at about a 45 degree angle facing forward and then push half down and half forward. This causes some of the magnesium to ignite in the air and land on the grass instead of just a spark that disappears when landing.
