Choice for a second rifle
So having bought the rifle I wanted as an all-rounder(.30-06), I'm now in the market to buy a second.
I need a rifle that my brother or dad can use while we hunt, and it must be able to serve as a backup for my rifle.
So far I'm thinking of going down in calibre, rather than up. A .375 would be nice, but price plays a part, and I'm not planning on taking anything bigger than Kudu.
Initially I leaned towards a .25-06, then the .270, but since reading threads on this site, I'm starting to lean towards a 7x57mm.
I'm a fan of the .243, but I want something a bit heavier.
Any thoughts?

Re: Choice for a second rifle
I have a 30-06, and my next one down is a .243, then 223. The 6.5 X 55 is also a great calibre.
The best backup rifle is another 30-06 :-)
I would personally go for something like a 375. I use mine for kudu and blesbuck as well.
You will eventually buy a 375, believe me.

Re: Choice for a second rifle
The .270 is starting to look appealing once again for it overlap with the .30-06, but now the .375 Ruger is starting to crawl its way into the fray.
I'm going to need a bigger safe...

Re: Choice for a second rifle
I also started out with a Remington mod700 30-06 and I am now very close in securing a .243 in the new year. Photo from web posted below. It is a HOWA Varminter with the ambidextrous stock (family is mixed left and right hand shooters) with a bull barrel.
B3.

Re: Choice for a second rifle
Hi,
a .270 will compliment your .30-06 nicely. Most people say that you do not need both, but what has need got to do with it anyway.
Load your .30-06 with heavier 200 grain bullets at around 2,500 fps (or 180 gr at 2,700 fps) and your .270 with 150 grainers at around 2,800 fps (or 130 gr at 3,000 fps).
Now you have both the ideal bush and plains hunting rifles, take both hunting wherever you go and in a pinch one can do what the other can should you develop scope problems on one rifle (here the heavier 150 grain bullets in the.270 may give you more versatility).
Buy the .270 in the same make and model as your .30-06, and you will shoot equally well with either rifle too.
I too love the 7x57 but it cannot really do anything tha the .30-06 cannot (not that this should stop you from getting one). The .30-06 loaded with 220 grain round nose bullets has a greater sectional density and impact velocity than the legendary 7x57 175 grain round. (It looks good too, really just an oversize 7x57.)
The .25-06 is also a great flat shooter, but the .270 loaded with 130 grain bullets is as good for long rage work and has a reputation as a killer of note.
I think the .270 is where it is at for you.

I say 7x57. Did quite a bit of research on it. Awesome round and I've shot with it quite a bit. Google "W.D.M. Bell"
I will admit I'm very biased since my dad owns one and it will become mine soon

Re: Choice for a second rifle
Go with the 270 - it makes the most sense for your requirements. If it was a lighter rifle just for you I would stop dead at the 243 and go no further but for what you want for someone else to hunt with you yet go down in cal the 270 is the ticket!

Re: Choice for a second rifle
Well, enough said, looking at the choices and the bracket in which you want to place it, the 270 Win would probably fit best, although everything else mentioned will also do the job, with the 270 Win you've got the luxury of going up and fast, the 2 rifles (.30-06 and 270) will suit you for eveything South Africa has got on affer bar dangerous game. If you do not like the 270 Win there are always the option of going for the 7 x 64 Brenneke, virtually almost the same as the 270 except you are using 7mm projectiles, you're range of bullet weights is from 110 gr up to 190 gr, which leaves a big area where it overlap the .30-06 in bullet weight range and velocity. There is just something about 7mm Calibres and accuracy, don't know why but due to design the 7mm-08 and 7mm Tombi are only eclipsed by the 6mm PPC in accuracy.

Why did no one mention the 300 Wind Bag, just my two cents.
Fast, Flat and it can chuck boulders.
