    Default Firearm Access Control

I have a situation where I am not allowed to enter a working premise with my firearm - by virtue of the rusted and worn "no firarms allowed beyond this point" sign at the entrace to the property. The irony is that for me to arrive, once a week, at that entrance and do my job, I experience all the circumstances that motivated me to apply for my firearm...travelling long distances, remotely, alone, with expense equipment...etc, etc. I thus approached the safety guy who works for this specific company, and asked him to consider a facility whereby I could safely store my firearm at the main entrance to the property - he replied (reluctantly) that with the new Firearms Control Act in place, this entire situation is "sticky" and that he would not want to even consider the placement of such a facility and thus taking the responsibility for it....so, I have the right to bear arms...but I am not allowed to bear them on his property...but he is also not prepared to place a facility that will allow safe storage. Somehow I feel wronged by this???

Search the forum - this has been discussed before I believe.

IMO if they do not want you to carry a firearm beyond a certain point then they should provide the necessary (and legal) safekeeping facilities for you.

Clarify this issue with the HR Manager. +20 years ago I had a similiar experience at the company I worked for and the firearm was stolen out of my briefcase. The SAP were not impressed and I was declared unfit for 3 years!!

If they don't search you, why not carry it. Just ensure your concealment is good. Its easier to appologise than to ask permission.

This is true. We have a strict no firearm policy as well (I work at a casino), but I already had a chat with the General Manager, Security Manager and HR Manager, and all are fine with me carrying my firearm provided that it is completely concealed, which it should be in any case.
I do work more int he back-of-house areas, so that's probably the reason for their compromise.
PLUS I travel a shitty road in and out of work each day, so I gave them the alternative: "Provide me with a secueity escort to and from home each day if you don't want me to carry a firearm to defend myself."

Probably had more to do with the gun being unattended in a briefcase rather than having a gun in an area where they are prohibited by policy.

agree, but just make sure that you won't lose your job over it if you do get caught out. ignorance of the law/company policy is no excuse.

I've been carrying for a while and have always just declared my firearm to the security guards on entry if they were searching or had signs up.

At one Nedbank branch I used to frequent, the guard would just check my license and let me enter (very sensible in my view). At another the guard just looked at me blankly and let me proceed in any event - without even checking my licence! Not so sensible I would say.

The funniest I've experienced was at a SARS office. As I approached the metal detector and x-ray setup the security guard was busy running through his millionth rendition of "cellphone, wallet, keys in the tray please. Step through..." for the person in front of me. I walked straight up to him and told him that I was carrying a sidearm. He just stared at me blankly, so I asked him politely if he wanted to see my licence or whether they had safekeeping facilities. He answered in the negative, so I politely asked whether I could continue in and he said yes.

As I started walking he called out for me to stop. "Here we go..." I thought and turned around.

"Cellphone, wallet, keys in the basket please" he said, which I did, walked through the metal detector (which of course protested loudly at the firearm on my hip) and laughed so much I could barely collect my belonings from the other side of the x-ray machine!

    TIA brothers, TIA

A few days ago I went to the provincial vehicle registration centre. At the door I now see they've got a "no guns" sign and they've got a metal detector. I said hello to the guard and asked about safekeeping facilities - they had none. Showed him my license and in I went. No problems.

A funny that happened a few years ago At a time a number of bank robberies were reported in the media.I walked into the local bank with a fair amount of cash for the company I was working for.I was packing a pistol and two mags. The guard at the door searched me with a metal detector wand and did not find anything.Supriesed I took the wand from him checked the batteries and they were put in the wrong way around I took them out changed them around and put against the gun.I went crazy and the gaurd was so shocked I just waked past him and he said nothing.
