Extract from the AR15.com news letter concerning the Brady Campaign
Why does this sound so familiar!??
"Five Minutes" By Joe DeBergalis (DirectAction)
Sometimes all one can do is stand back and applaud the efforts of others. Such is the case within this month's column. Please read this analysis issued by the great folks down at the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action (www.nraila.org) on March 4, 2011. Plain and simple. If this doesn't move you to spend five minutes to vote or even registering to vote and take action - nothing will.
Brady Campaign's "Sweet 17" Gun Control Laws
On Monday, the 17th anniversary of the Brady Act, the Brady Campaign issued a news release calling for -- what else? -- 17 gun laws. (Actually it called for 20, doubling up a few of them to fit in with the catchy "17" gimmick.) The 20 laws are these:
1. Prohibit private sales and other transfers of firearms
2. Prohibit people on the FBI's secret "terrorist watchlist" from possessing firearms and prevent them from challenging their listing in a fair and open hearing in court
3. Prohibit standard ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, which the Brady Campaign now calls "Big Bullet Blasting Boxes"
4. Repeal the law that prohibits bogus lawsuits seeking multi-million-dollar judgments against the firearm industry when criminals misuse firearms
5. Repeal the law that prevents anti-gun groups from compromising legitimate police investigations by disclosing sensitive firearm trace data and using it to sue firearm manufacturers and dealers
6. Prohibit the ownership of a firearm without a license
7. Prohibit the purchase of an unregistered firearm
8. Require gun owners to report lost or stolen guns
9. Use federal taxpayer dollars to conduct anti-gun research (we can worry about the deficit later on)
10. Repeal the law that prohibits the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from using federal funds to conduct anti-gun research (hundreds of thousands of people die of diseases every year, but let's focus on guns instead)
11. Prohibit multiple purchases of firearms
12. Give the BATFE more authority to revoke dealer licenses
13. Repeal the law that requires the FBI to destroy the records of approved background checks within 24 hours (you can't register guns without records, after all)
14. Create "new technologies" for gun tracing -- which probably means "microstamping" requirements for new handguns
15. Require guns to be made with "smart" gun technology that no one wants, and few could afford
16. Require dealers to install security systems (presumably designed by the Brady Campaign)
17. Require dealers to run NICS checks on their employees
18. Prohibit dealers who go out of business from transferring firearms to their personal collections
19. Prohibit the possession of firearms by people convicted of "violent" misdemeanors -- continuing the desire to lower the bar and prohibit more and more people from possessing guns for minor offenses
20. Prohibit the possession of firearms by people convicted of violent offenses as juveniles
As if this current agenda wasn't enough, it wasn't hard to think of another "17" gun control ideas the Brady Campaign has come up with over the years, some of them under the group's previous names (the National Council to Control Handguns, then Handgun Control, Inc.). If the group is still around on February 28, 2028, the 34th anniversary of the Brady Act, maybe it will still be pushing some of these.
The next "17" (yes, like the Brady Campaign, we came up with 20) from our trip down Memory Lane are:
1. Ban all handguns
2. Ban compact self-defense handguns (because they're too small)
3. Ban .50 caliber rifles (because they're too big)
4. Ban "assault weapons" (however they are defined at the time of the proposed ban)
5. Ban "plastic" handguns (which don't exist)
6. Ban the purchase of more than one handgun in a 30-day period
7. Impose a waiting period on handgun purchases
8. Require handgun owners to have liability insurance
9. Let police chiefs arbitrarily reject carry permit applications, without appeal
10. Impose prohibitive taxes on small pistol caliber ammunition
11. Ban all semi-automatic shotguns, under language proposed in past legislation by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy
12. Require "ballistic fingerprint" data to be taken from every new handgun and registered to the gun's owner
13. Ban hollow-point self-defense handgun ammunition because it expands, rather than penetrates
14. Ban rifle ammunition as "armor piercing" because it penetrates, rather than expands
15. Impose gun dealer license fees that are so high no gun dealer can afford them
16. Require a permit to purchase a firearm
17. Require an expensive "arsenal license" to own 20 or more firearms, or 1,000 or more rounds of ammunition
18. Authorize the police to inspect gun owners' homes
19. Prohibit mail-order ammunition sales
20. Treat gun parts (down to springs and screws) as "firearms"
Then again, after coming up with all these ideas to attack Americans' Second Amendment rights for the last 37 years, the Brady Campaign of the future will surely have plenty of new material to work with. And that just means gun owners will have to stay alert and active. He is best who is trained in the severest school! Fear no man.
