For those thinking about buying a Maverick 88, Mossberg 500 or 590 watch this video first. There is good reason not to buy one if you are relying on it to work.

Basically if you drop it from about a foot it can make the gun unusable. Watch from about 4:27.

This has me thinking that the Maverick 88 has gone from a decent gun for the price to a very poor one and just not worth the risk if using it for defence/SHTF scenarios. If you want to use it just for plinking/target shooting/hunting then you are probably good to go, but if failure is not an option then avoid it. Will test mine tomorrow to see if my model suffers from the same failure but if what I saw in the video is true for most then it is a major flaw in the Maverick 88/Mossberg 500 design.

Whilst some see them as complex, a good second hand Beretta is a really solid option.They hold up well to saps abuse.

I haven't tried the competition, but my Mossberg 500 7+1 has run flawlessly since I bought it (secondhand). I'd never swap it for anything because I know it works.
