Default How to correctly sight-in a rifle scope

    Dudes,
This should not be rocket science, but can the people in the know please give me the ABC’s of properly sighting in a rifle scope.
I have tried a search on the site, but with no great success.
    Thanks,
    AndreP

Do you want to have the whole procedure, from mounting the scope, right through to sighting it in, or just the sighting in procedure, once scope is properly mounted?

    PottieP,
Do yourself a favour and read the entire article. Its very comprehensive.
What type of bases and rings are you using?

I don't know the correct way, but I did as I learnt for recoiless rifles in the army

    1 take the bolt out
2 stick a little marker on a wall
3 look through the barrell at the marker
4 adjust the sight to aim at the marker while keeping the barrell at the marker
5 visit the rifle range for fine tuning

    It worked great

Hi. I am no pro but i have set a few rifle scopes in by this method and it works great for me.
1: 1stly make sure your mounts are solid good quality mounts
    2: bore sight it
3: @ range set target @ 25m and shoot three shots making sure youe scope is on full magnification.
4: if your grouping is good then adjust your windage and elevation accordingly.
5: now shoot another three shots group and that should put you on the bull or you may still need to adjust.
6: once you are happy with your 3shots grouping at 25m you can now proceed to 100m and just fine tune it accordingly.
7: if you are to zero at 200m then make sure you are 1inch above the bulls eye at 100m depending on caliber and grains you are shooting.
8: now you are good to go and can just re-check it at 100m, 150m, and 200m to know your bullets trajectory.
NB>>>>>> dont shoot on a hot barrel when setting your rifle. allow it to cool to normal temp otherwise you will be wasting your time and ammo.

I fitted a lot of scopes. I lapped the rings in place on the rifle as described in the article refered to by ThomasT. But I didn't buy an expensive kit, I made by own bar on my lathe. That was several years ago. A lot of good work is done in SA, and there are various other factors the article did not mention. But you want to know how to sight in after the scope has been fitted. I posted an explanation on another thread, but if you want the full nitty gritty about sighting in, including point blank zeroing, I'll send it to you if you contact me at boothroyd@polka.co.za.
