I echo Paul, it is a very good post Willie. I enjoy your angle on the argument.
The shoots satisfy all the points that you mention AND they collect money for charity - and I will hasten to add, that it is a very important charity! Education is the only place where we can foster the ability to solve the problems that are being created as we speak.

Re: Pigeon hunt may be illegal - NSPCA
Very well put Willie. Every year thousands of shotgunners go out into Sunflower fields and other crops at this time of the year to shoot pigeons. Are they all breaking the law? No, of course not. What is the difference if they are doing it as part of an organised event or on their own. Pigeons are considered vermin when they raid crops and there is no bag limit. Even with hundreds of thousand being shot their numbers continue to rise. The NSPCA is just using this as an oportunity to make a statement and maybe set a precedent that will add to their effort to outlaw all hunting. Who will pay for the "humane methods" that they advocate. Surely not them.

Re: Pigeon hunt may be illegal - NSPCA
The NCSPCA is infamous for touting garbage to increase their pitiful public exposure.
Their 'humane' methods would be along the lines of dynamiting reedbeds to control the quelea (finch) populations maybe? Except how do you dynamite the forests to get rid of the nesting pigeons?
Maybe they propose mass poisoning the birds?

Re: Pigeon hunt may be illegal - NSPCA
Jacaranda had quite a thing about it this morning. The presenter could not believe that the poor little pigeons will be shot with SHOTGUNS of all things. Some comments were made of glass houses, which I could not quite fathom the meaning of.
My problem is that he was creating this whole atmosphere of utmost cruelty perpetrated by the big bad farmers, and was calling for something more humane to curb the damage they wreak.
I nearly phoned in but it was not up for discussion. Wanted to hear from him what he was expecting. Mass poisoning? Perhaps not planting crops to let them starve?

First Pigeons Next Hunting then finally Fishermen... These people can destroy one of the most valuable resources that attracts millions of foreigners to our country every year. Yes conserve wildlife do what is correct but don't take away our hobby and interest's.

Re: Pigeon hunt may be illegal - NSPCA
By their logic, we should ban lions, oh and wild dogs they are so nasty, brutally tearing their prey apart while they squeal helplessly. We should feed them only eukanuba, with rice and veggies.....
As for the naughty farmers who go and plant 1000s of hectares of mielies and sunflowers, what were they expecting from the pretty birdies. They should just put some shade netting up over the fields, that'll work! Or even better, allow the fields to grow back to natural bush and we can eat the natural organic food from nature raw and uncooked, afterall its uber healthy for you and baboons do so well on it. Ultimately we will all reach a state of perfect enlightenment where we all chant aaauuum together get our nourishment and happiness from the air around us and the energy from the vibes given off by all the happy creatures in the universe.
Sorry sarcastic rant over.. for now

Re: Pigeon hunt may be illegal - NSPCA
I think I will go pigeon shooting this weekend. I did not have plans and was at a loss of what to do this weekend. Thanks to the NSPCA for helping me to come to this decision.
