There were some interest in BFN regarding IDPA but unfortunately this has not been sufficient to get IDPA up and running in BFN (pitty). There are members of the IPSC club that might be interested in IDPA but you need someone to take charge of the situation and run with it (are you interested?). I believe that should you contact the IDPA people they would be more than willing to give assistance in this regard.

I just remain amassed in that if you look at our current situation in SA (crime and firearm licencing issues) that the level of participation remains so low. Yes there are active clubs but for example if I look at BFN and the size of the city and I look at the amount of active shooters in IPSC and the disinterest in IDPA.....I just wonder.....

I have been reading up on IPSC and this is what I've found so far (please correct me if I'm wrong)

    1. Dedicated status:

Shooter should attain 6 points per year (six level 1 shoots, 3 level two shoots, etc)
Club has to find you acceptable (you probably shouldnt show up drunk wearing rambo clothes ;D)

    2. Guns

"Shoulder able" arm of 5.56mm min caliber
    Pistol of 9mm min
    Semi or pump shotgun

    3. Club

I'll email Kobus de Wet ( jjdewet@iafrica.com ) to find out what the situation in the Free State is

    Stuff I'm not sure about

    1. If you only have a pistol or shotgun can you still compete?
    2. This will be an relatively expensive sport. Can one use reloaded ammo?
    3. I assume it will take at least a year to become a dedicated sportsman (as I read it).

Thanks for all the information in the thread so far.

Kobus de Wet is in Welkom. He is as far as I know still on the Free State Committee (could be the chairman). I will PM you a contact in BFN regarding the club in BFN.

    1. Not to sure about the ins and outs myself
    2. Reloaded - yes, yes and yes again
    3. You will be amased how quick that year will pass

Basically you can own a firearm that fits the disipline in which you have dedicated status. The firearm must fit the type of dedicated status.

    Christo,

I suggest you go the www.sapsa.co.za and www.sadpa.co.za there you will find the links to the rules and the different divisions. You could even get a LM6 or a Ruger Mini 14. Joint a club (IPSC or IDPA) and speak to the guys. Also go and look at the topic I posted about 3 Gun in IPSC regarding ideas about the Shotgun and the Rifle.

Anyone here license a semi-auto shotgun yet?

If so did you license as a dedicated hunter / sportmen.

From the few dealers and "FCA specialists" I've spoken to they indicated you should be able to license under either of the two

Brad, I think I'd go the Sportsman route, for 3 gun or even clays. I know the Franchi AL48's were sort after for 3 gun. Not sure the powers that be would smile on a semi for hunting. ;)
