    Default FAILED ROBBERY AT CHURCH

Friday, 03/06/2011, approx 07:30, Northdene - Nirvana Hills, Durban (indian community near the Dairy)

two armed black males attempted to rob a group of youths at a youth meeting at the Golden Rule Chapel during their youth meeting.
There had been a spate of daytime burglaries and robberies during the past two weeks in the area, so a parent of one of the youths had been standing watch, outside, near the church entrance.
the church had no driveway gates (after all it is a place of worship) and the doors were open as youth were still arriving. one black male appeared from behind the church building (were there is no access to the building unless accessed from the residential property bordering the rear of the church property) and managed to get the drop on the "sentry", who was then taken into the church were the youth were being made to lie prostrate on the church floor. the second b/m was instructing the youth to empty their pockets. Whilst being jostled around with a gun pointed to his chest, the "sentry" (an unassuming individual who had been in a few firearm related skirmishes) made eye contact with his son and decided that that was the moment to react. the "sentry", who had had his hands in his jacket pockets the entire time, then fired his weapon three times through his jacket pocket , killing the first b/m whilst his son and two other youths overpowered the other surprised b/m. after a brief skirmish, the b/m managed to escape and flee the scene. Soon (approx. 30 min. later) the place was overun with police, who to date has not found the escape artist.

obviously the incident was the talk of the sleepy hollow during the next few days.
the details related here is from my conversation with the "sentry" ( a good friend of mine) and his son.
unfortunately the local papers did not carry the incident.
