hunting rifles and
Hi guys.
Going to be buying my first hunting rifles as I understand the licencing act you can have 3 rifles for hunting.
"please correct me if I'm wrong"
I'm looking at buying
.243 for small game
.308 for medium game
93,62 for large dangerous game
I already have a .308 in mind that I want to buy.
What would you recommend for the .243 and the 93,62.
Thanks

Re: hunting rifles and
Thesayin,
Welcome to the hunting world.
I assume you already have some handgun for SD, then you are correct that you can only have 3 more firearms unless you have dedicated status.
Your small and medium calibre choices I can agree with.
The 9,3 x 62 Mauser is an awesome calibre, but a bit marginal for really dangerous game, and illegal for DG in many African countries. Rather consider the .375H&H, or the .416 Rem or Rigby.
On the other hand you also need a shotgun for bird hunting, a flatshooter for large game in open terrain (eg. 300 WM ) and many more. You see 4 firearms is just too restrictive, you will have to go the dedicated route.
So buy those first 3 and start planning for your dedicated status.

Re: hunting rifles and
Unless you want to hunt buff and the like stick with the 9,3 x 62, it really is a awesome caliber.

Re: hunting rifles and
and cheaper to shoot.
my recomendations are as follows:
a .22lr for playing/plinkering
a .243 for small game
a .25-06 or a .270 for the long shots on small game
a .308 as a bush caliber
a .300wm or .338wm for the very long shots at most game
a 9.3x62 for big game in the bush
a .416 rigby/.458 lott dangerous game where ever you go
a 45-7to just have
a 2x 12gauge o&u and semi-auto
yes a man cant live with just 3 guns so dedicated is the way to go. the above list is what i have or what i want.
hope this helps.
cheers and enjoy shopping around.
david.

Re: hunting rifles and
Your choices are pretty on track. I'd suggest buying one and use it for a year or two before you buy the second. That way you'll see what you really like and you second choice will be better.
If you're a biltong hunter, I'd initially steer clear of the larger calibre. While the 9.3x62 is a great calibre, its overkill for most meat.
You'd have to specify what your needs are to get more advice.
For me, choices are:
.243 or .25-06 for long shots and target
.30-06 for everything up to eland in the bush
If I get a large calibre, it will be a .375H&H rather than 9.3 cause its more of a classic safari rifle calibre. Easier to find ammo, but most of them are hard on the shoulder and get heavy on a long walk, so its not the rifle I would go hunt with if I can rather take my 30-06.
