Re: 8x57mm SJ Mauser
I commence with re-loading for my 8x57JS Mauser.
I am using Barnes 160 gn TTSX BOAT TAIL bullets .
Magnum Primers
29.5 inch barrel
BC=.400
I am contemplating using the same powder as what is used in this reloading data sheet. Since the SONCHEM powders are difficult to get and every gun shop has these imported powders in stock.
I will appreciate it very much if a member who use these powders can give me some feedback in this regards please??

Re: 8x57mm SJ Mauser
I need to prepare for some blesbok hunting at longer distances, I currently have 200 & 220grn bullets. Considering the Speer 150's for the blesbok.
Does anyone have any experience reloading 125grn bullets in 8x57JS? (I have these on my reloading shelf)
Rifle has a 20" barrel, 1:9.65 twist

Re: 8x57mm SJ Mauser
What do you consider to be longer distances?
Between the 150gr and the 125gr I would choose the 150gr, the 125gr will give no practical advantage in trajectory at longer range. It might be worth checking the trajectory of the 200gr bullet, provided that you are familiar with bullet drop at 250 and 300m it should work well with a 200gr spitzer bullet out to 300m.

Re: 8x57mm SJ Mauser
I want to be well prepared for 300m.
All my 200grn bullets are RN, 220grn are Spitzer BT.
I'll see what the local Gunshops have in stock.

Re: 8x57mm SJ Mauser
What velocity are you shooting the 220gr bullets at? And what make are they?

Re: 8x57mm SJ Mauser
If it is the Sierra Game King, it has a good bc, if you can get it between 2400 and 2500 fps it should work ok. On their webpage Sierra says that the 220gr Game King is too hard for the 8x57, there seems to be concerns about it not expending at 8x57 velocities. I find this surprising, I have never seen a Game King in any caliber being too hard, quite the opposite. However, it is something to keep in mind.

Re: 8x57mm SJ Mauser
Using S355, a 24 inch barrel and the 220gr Sierra there is a safe node at or near 2460fps. Give barrel length, COL and propellant to be used and you can get a better idea of expected performance.

Hornady SST 170gr kan ook goed werk vir die langer afstande.
