Jackal Time!!!!
as most of you that actively "try" and control your Jackal and lynx problem know, we are in one of the best times of the year to try and make some sort of impact on their numbers. locally i have seen the young jackal about a month sooner as usual. i dont know why. we had very good rainy season for 2010 and 2011, maybe that had an effect. as well as the fact that the grass are still so high for this time of year. it is realy difficult to spot them were normally we can see for miles due to few vegetation.
i had one of the worst seasons in terms of heads of jackal taken. maybe my tactics needs tweaking but they are not called jackal for nothing.
if you have some successes please ad a pic and at least let me know how you did it. remember this time of the year to shoot the parents only after you know were the young ones are. here is a pic of a couple of young ones this time of year last year. however no luck this year. i know when you try and get some sort of upper hand on them things are tough but this year its 10 times as tough.

Re: Jackal Time!!!!
Have you considered using a dog to protect your animals ? Other farmers using dogs report a 100% success rate. Im referring to dogs that are reared with and live permanently with the herd. I have more detail if you're interested.

Re: Jackal Time!!!!
if you are refering to Anatool dogs, they seem very fond of the neigbour's sheep and catlle. in my region not one farmer who tried antool dogs still uses them or had sucseses witj it. the farmes also complained that the dogs ate the smaller game like duiker and steenbok. however, i do know of farmer that did have joy.

Re: Jackal Time!!!!
Stats for farmers using the dogs show a 95% to 100% reduction in losses.
Its worth a try - all costs - training, vet etc are sponsored for the first year.

Re: Jackal Time!!!!
sounds intresting. all costs including lifestock and game losses?
i can give you at least 10 farmers were the dogs didnt work, not just that they contributed to the stock losses.
if this works it will only work in a year's time as soon as the dogs mature. my problem is now and i am intrested in the methods that will kill them from now till say the beginning of Feb when the young starts leaving the parents.

Re: Jackal Time!!!!
I doubt you'll get stock losses back but with a 95% to 100% success rate it sounds worth a try - even if its only for next year.
It doesn't sound like the same program the other farmers used. This is an Endangered Wildlife Sponsored program and they reckon its always worked.
If you're genuinly interested (even for next season) I'll get you the details.

no I am sorry Enigma, not cool
A - this is the pig and vermin hunting section, thats like going into the adult book shop and complaining or pulling faces about the porn!
B- Farmers have every right to protect their livelihood by problem animal control, as much right as gun owners have to protect their right to have guns!
C - 300H&H has every right to post here, pulling sulky faces about it is juvenile, you are better than that!I am studying an awesome brand of leg fighting which was inspired by dung beetles and I think my brand of Kraft Manure is superior to all other styles ever invented. Furthermore I challenge all other manurists to a rolling contest where we shall establish whose manure ball is the biggest! I shall call it Honest Kraft Manure and declare it superior to all other brands of manure and will tell you that I have claimed the lineage directly to Imshi the great Dragon Kru Master Beetler who invented manuring, by gathering all manure from different animals together and making it work as the worlds most effective fertilizer. I proved myself by being members of not one but three super elite special gardening departments who were responsible for spreading manure to combat weed infestations!

My bad abhm. Yes I understand having to hunt jackal and stuff. I have had to do stuff like that too not too recently... One can't always live in a sensitised world ... It had to happen.... Baboons is what my quarry was... Don't like to admit it but they were screwing up the crops...
