SAPS Capt in court after arrest for selling ammo and SAPS uniforms - Cape Town
Proof of the unfortunate reality of the crime SA scenario, proving again that one can't simply trust everyone in a police uniform.
A police captain attached to the Hawks will remain in custody following her first appearance in the Cape Town District Court on Monday, for allegedly selling unlicensed ammunition while on stress leave.
Esmerald Bailey, 43, appeared before Magistrate Eric Louw, who ordered that she remain in custody for a week while police checked her background.
Bailey, known for her investigation that led to Dina Rodrigues being sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of baby Jordan Leigh Norton in June 2005, was arrested on Friday.
She appeared with co-accused Waleed Hendricks, 25. Both will appear in court again on December 19, when they are expected to launch a joint bail application.
According to the Hawks, an operation was authorised on suspicion that Bailey was involved in the illegal sale of police uniforms and ammunition.
In the course of the investigation, Hendricks allegedly supplied an under-cover police agent with a small quantity of ammunition in a parking area for R4000.
Hendricks was arrested after receiving the money. He took the investigation team to Bailey's home at the Palm Springs apartment complex in Brooklyn.
In that apartment, police found more illegal police ammunition, as well as missing forensic bags containing exhibits that were to be used in different criminal cases and police documents.
Bailey had been on stress leave for the last three years.

That seems to be the norm these days. Get suspended, sit on your bum and get paid for it. No wonder productivity stinks, monies are being wasted and it seems as we have a police force of which half are off due to stress.

It's an isolated case.

Explain what you mean ? Are you referring to 3 years stress leave? I know for a fact that is not an isolated case.
Are you referring to the sale of ammo and uniforms, or that it was a SAPS Captain selling it?
Criminals have been spotted wearing SAPS uniforms all over the country. How is it isolated?
CCTV camera and cell phone camera footage seem to prove the isolation theory wrong.
Even the firearms used in crimes or attempted crime where SAPS uniforms were used , perps were using R5 and Z88s - all weapons used by the SAPS.

Typical ammo she could have got access to would be:
9 × 19mm Parabellum
12 bore shot gun rounds
5.56 x 45mm NATO
Used in
9mm pistols
12 bore shotguns
R5 and R4 assault rifles
Police uniforms would generally be sought by criminals to impersonate police officers in order to gain access where access would generally not be allowed.

Her alleged actions do not impact on any other member of the force or on the force itself at all.

That is just the problem, her actions do not speak for them but it gives them a bad name in the public's eye, so many police threads only on site site. If they get a robbery with someone in police uniform then the minister would be held liable again, as if he forced her to sell it whilst sitting at home for 3 years and getting pay.

I assume Paul was being sarcastic?
Now if she was working for me her employment contract would have been terminated ages ago, 3 x yr "illness" = "incapacity".....
