Sawn off Shotgun
Hi Guys
Here to ask another question and yes i have searched, but haven't quite got the answer i need. Is it possible to licence a sawn off shotgun, do we have a minimum length etc...
I do realise that there is prob zero reason to want one, but there is sentimental value in this shottie and i would hate to see it going to the big graveyard in the sky.
It has previously been licenced obviously, i'm just not sure if anything has changed and made them illegal.
Would sentimental value be sufficient motivation or would you need to motivate for snake/ fowl etc erradication...
Thanks guys
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Sawn off Shotgun
I dont recall them being illegal?
Motivate as you would any other double barrel - nowhere do you HAVE to specify its barrel length, just stipulate it as a short range shotgun.

Re: Sawn off Shotgun
You can have a 1 inch barrel shotgun if you like.
If a gunsmith shortens it, you cant do it yourself, he has to apply for permission.Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:
But I know one thing that never dies,
the glory of the great dead.

Re: Sawn off Shotgun
think the whole "illegal sawn off shotty" things comes from the States, popularized by movies.

Re: Sawn off Shotgun
The bullet failed to make sparks. Was not possible to ignite the fuel. Not even a cigarette dropped in a puddle of petrol ignited it.
I suppose a tracer might ignite it, but only if the tank is not full, and the round goes through the empty part of the tank. It's not the petrol that burns, but the correct mixture of petrol fumes and oxygen.
So, the chances are pretty slim.

Think it was "Penn & Teller tell a lie" the other night where they showed you need two rounds to ignite a petrol tank.
1 to start draining the tank till there was enough space to create a nice 9/1 ratio of air/fumes
2nd tracer round above the fuel level to ignite the mixture.
