Ruger#1
Is the Ruger #1 a single shot rifle? What is attraction of a single shot rifle? I would have thought all hunters would prefer one or two in the mag for insurance!

Re: Ruger#1
For hunting non-dangerous game a single shot rifle is as good as a magazine rifle. With a bit of practise it can be reloaded very fast, I know people who have shot the ph qualification with Ruger no.1's. The Ruger no.1 has the advantage of being 4" shorter overall than a magazine rifle with the same barrel length.

Re: Ruger#1
I've always wanted one. Appeals to the tradionalist in me. I don't think there is a more beautiful rifle out there.
Dear JS4 and others. I serial edit posts to ensure correct spelling. I can't do it any more. Please forgive any errors. I'm not a a bad person. :)

With reference to what TStone is referring to. The Ruger No. 1 A at top is a 30-06 with 22 inch barrel - a beauty in the bush. Below is a normal 24 inch bolt action. The Ruger is like a .22 compared to normal rifles.
The hunter's aim is to shoot a one shot terminal impact blow to fell the animal with the least amount of suffering. I have fired 3 shots at game with the 30-06 and all were one shot kills - 2 Impala rams and a young Eland bull. You make doubly sure when you use a single shot. I have another single shot Musgrave in 243 and have never felt at a disadvantage due to the one shot capability.

Re: Ruger#1
I have a wrist strap that fits on my left wrist. It carries 5 extra rounds for my 7mmRemMag. You can reload the No1 pretty damn fast.
Used the rifle once if a field rifle competition (just for shits 'n giggles). One detail was 5 shots in 45 seconds, standing at a warthog at about 60 meters. Finished with seconds to spare.(Barrel did get very hot- won't do that again with new barrel)

Re: Ruger#1
Dave,
I have one in 375 H&H.Its a lovely rifle and very accurate.I get 1" groupings with 300gr Interlocks at 100m.
A bit of a kick over the bench but very nice to hunt with and it handles like a dream.

Re: Ruger#1
I love my Ruger No. 1 in. 45-70! Yes, it is a fat slow cow to load, but that's why you have to make the first shot count! I carry the rifle in the bush with 9 rounds in loops on an elastic buttstock sleeve. Reloads are fast enough for your average bushveld hunt.

Re: Ruger#1
And FFS, please don't call my Ruger a "lever action" in the style of a Marlin. My ultimate bushpig gun is a Marlin, but I have a single shot, falling block action. The loads I can load in my Ruger eats a Marlin for breakfast.
