Default Silencers - are they legal?

What is the legal status of silencers in South Africa? I would love to fit a silencer to my pistol for my range visits.

So are silencers legal or not legal under the FCA?

Suppressors are legal to own in S.A
Getting a pistol with a threaded barrel may be an issue though, unless you have a USP Tactical.

Do you mean that a normal Glock cannot be fitted with a silencer?

They are normally screwed to the outside of the barrel.

Am I correct in saying that a suppressor is for noise and a compensator is for recoil?

Here's pretty much how a standard suppressor or silencer will be mounted.

So do you need a modified barrel, or will it just screw into a normal Glock, for example?

With handguns, a longer barrel is usually installed which has the end threaded. Sig (in the Classic line) and H&K (their .40 and .45 caliber Tactical Models and the USP9SD as well as the USP .45CT) as well as Beretta with their PX4SD .45 offer factory pistols set up for them as they come from the box, (although I am not certain the Beretta's extended barrel is threaded as it comes from the factory)others can be adapted, such as by use of a G34 barrel in a G17 which is then threaded, but that, of course, entails licensing another barrel in SA.
