    Default Biltong hunting

    Hi guys

This might seem like an ambiguous question but I'll try anyway.

What is the best value animal to hunt in terms of cost to the amount of venison you will get in return?

I am an inexperienced hunter in that I have only been hunting for 4 years and have only hunted Blesbok so I don't know what other animals dress out at.

    Thanks

I'd wager blesbok is actually quite good bang for buck... (all puns intended)

If you get the chance to go to Nam, I'd say gemsbok is the best value.

Agree with Pirate, Gemsbuck good value, as is a nice big Kudu cow. I like hunting Eland, as it gives me big pieces of meat to work with. I'd rather work an Eland, than 5 Impala (price wise the same) and I bet you'll get more biltong from the Eland.

Depends on how picky you are, in terms of weight vs money it's the BWB, but not all people use it for biltong.

Is there a particular reason for not using it for biltong?

Kurly, I am not the biggest expert on blouwildebeest, but people normally makes droëwors and stuff, I posted this because I know that for their weight they are good value for money, our fellow forum users can shed some light on their biltong quality.

In my opinion any animal that slaughters out at R25 per Kg is good value for money.

Gamefarmer - what would a mature eland cow slaughter out at?
