PMP missing out on a market?
Please enlighten me if I have the cat caught by the arse.
Why is PMP so horribly expensive? Is the SA civilian market too small for them to care?
Take primers for example. In recent threads, there is made mention of CCI prices vs PMP, where the locally manufactured PMP is almost double the CCI. Why is that?
Range ammo. We can buy hot S&B 9mm FMJ (or CMJ, not sure?) for slightly more than R3 / round. PMP's FMJ are stupidly expensive, and I'm told does not even make factor? Their JHP's certainly don't have a good rep, albeit a bit cheaper than other FMJ's.
Hunting ammo, the PMP standard range (which is only good for range ammo because the bullet is too soft if used in the faster rifles) is pretty expensive (about the same price as Winchester!). For us that shoot something like .30-06, going to the range with shop bought ammo is an expensive day out. Why can't they make range ammo? FMJ or something. That will mean that a lot of hunters / shooters out there will get to the range more often and shoot a bit more, which MIGHT lead to less wounded animals every year.
Surely if everything is locally made, they can get away with offering decent ammo to civilians at decent prices. I think they can probably take over the market for sport shooting ammo (for the non-reloaders) if they offer 5x56mm, 9mm, .40 and .45 ammo at prices below S&B and the likes.
Anyone else have input on why I get the perception that PMP is not interested, or perhaps not seeing the market that there is?Sent electronically, thus not signed.

You are spot on. Went in to a local dealer for some 9mmP S&B FMJ. They'd run out. PMP R125- for R25!!!!!

Re: PMP missing out on a market?
No I agree with you, it is a South African thing. If its says made in South Africa, translated "you are about to get ripped off" in my opinion its a Cancer that is killing our Country. Dealers dont get me wrong but there are a some out there that screw the proverbial pooch as well, Here and example. been a very amature fisherman i wanted some good quality equipment, shopped arround and Decided that I wanted a ABU Orra SX 20 reel , Local price R3800-00 online from Sweden landed in my hand, R1200-00. go figure. Also get .44Mag XTP's ammunition at R100-00 per 50 Cheaper than PMP stuff.
You must also remember that the US ammo Manuacturers make the bulk of their income from the Social shooter, PMP Denel make the bulk of their income from International Arms Deals and only 0.000001% from us , so who will they look after. Guys they dont give a hoot.
JUst wish we could get the international Powders.
Sorry my opinion

Simple. The government does not like firearms ownership. One way to reduce it is to increase costs. PMP is government owned. Do you honestly think they will support or stimulate shooting in SA by supplying a range of well priced products. The fact that we can get top class imported products cheaper, despite all of the import issues, just shows what a rip off PMP actually is.

Re: PMP missing out on a market?
Imo PMP does do not care and the people there have not cared for years about civilian and especially the sport shooting public..
PMP has huge government and export contracts for ammo and brass and they "think:" or decided they do not need to bother with the local reloading and sport shooting market.
There was a time (quite recently - and our USA members can most prob give better info) when you could buy PMP ammo like 5,56x45 in the USA for less money in rands than you could buy it here - however that may have come a bout imo it is a disgrace.
I do not support them and have not for 15 years.
I do not visit their stands at shows and do not waste my time talking shit with them there.

Re: PMP missing out on a market?
Hi there, my opinion the "dont give a hoot" part is a financial decision for the manfacturer and their share holders but I have experienced a lot of involvement over the last years from PMP sponsoring events and putting a lot of money back into SA hunting community. Many examples of this, PMP grouping competitions, SA Hunters competitions, The Gun Expo and on many other events PMP has featured. To me it seems that they are trying at least to give something back. The sad part is that there is always somebody that screws it up for all, an example of this is when Frontier had very affordable practise bullets a local gunshop was selling them at a premium price now nobody gets this aymore. If you dig into the above PMP issue you most prob will get the same.
Regards
