Section 13 License and Competency Applications Log
Hi All,
Have done the training for handgun, shotgun and bolt action rifle and will be submitting my competency applications for all three together with my license application (Section 13) for a S&W9c this coming week. So I have started this thread to track the progress and get some tips/suggestions along the way.
Dumb question maybe but do I need to submit three different competency applications? I see there is a form for "further competency - 517a"? Would I need to fill out 1x 517 (handgun) and 2x 517a's (shotgun, rifle)?
I'll be submitting my apps to the Sandton (Gallo Manor) station.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave
One application, just make sure you indicate all three categories by ticking the relevant boxes on the form.

Re: Section 13 License and Competency Applications Log
Hi Dave,
Stupid questions from me who is about to follow in your footsteps:
1) Is Sandton the correct place for me to apply if I live in Bryanston (East of William Nichol)?
2) Are the forms available over the internet?
3) My competencies will also all be applied for, with a SD License application - Is it sensible to submit them all together?
4) Did you happen to catch the name and contact number for the DFO?
Thanks,
Anton

Re: Section 13 License and Competency Applications Log
Hi Anton,
JG Walrus from the airrifle.co.za forum...? You're reputation precedes you...
I actually havn't submitted yet. I've been waiting for my safe to arrive, so I can install it and take photos of it installed to hopefully skip the safe inspection (to save time, and it'll be a lot more convenient).
Sandton Station would be the correct place as far as I understand. Sandton is the main one, but there are also "satellite" stations like the one in Gallo Manor.
I stay in Kelvin and thought I'd fall under the "Bramley" precint but It's Sandton according to this website: http://www.sandtoncpf.co.za/sector.html
For Bryanston it says that "part" of Bryanston is included... Could be that you fall under Randburg?
2) Yes you can get them off the net: http://www.saps.gov.za/crime_prevent...s/formseng.htm Forms SAPS 271 and SAPS 517
3) As I understand it, yes. Some DFO's seem to give you uphill if you hand them in at the sametime but they should allow you to do it. That's what I am planning on doing. I will report back early next week and see what they say.
4) Will let you know early next week!

That's me Dave
Would really appreciate it if you let me know how it goes...
I'm in Bryanston East, so believe Sandton is the one.
My old man is Rawlplug SA - let me know if you need Rawlbolts.
Regards,
Anton

Re: Section 13 License and Competency Applications Log
Knock off work early today to hand in my documents and get told I have to bring two people with for the interviews. Bugger... That is going to be mission to sort out the logistics but anyway...
Went straight to the Gallo Manor station to see if they had the same policy and they've moved their DFO's to the Sandton branch, so anybody planning on handing documents there should go straight to the main station.

You had to do what? WTF has time for that? Phone the CFR and confirm that it is policy ... two of my interview possibilities were a doctor and a lawyer. Sure, one is my father, but what are the chances of getting him to come in to the police station for an interview. I'd say that's complete BS. Are their phones not working anymore?

Re: Section 13 License and Competency Applications Log
They said they could do the 3rd interview by phone but I had to bring in two people for face to face interviews. Logistical nightmare. I got the impression it would make the DFO's life easier if he did the interview face to face....

Same situation at Bramley DFO, two people must be present for a face to face interview. And the third they can phone. Have organized with my two references to go next week.
