I needed 15.5 grains of 221 to get 1300+ fps with a cast bullet from a 7 1/2" Ruger. Your setup is light on fuel.

At R10/bullet though, it's a lot like a Prius. You pay less for fuel but much more in total...

No, I was nervous so I just focused on the chrony work.

I compared my notes:
255swc/1295fps = 949 ftlb
300cmj/1180fps = 927 ftlb
240mono/1373fps = 1004 ftlb

Does the ftlb relate to a better backup round, or will the 300 out penetrate it?

What should I carry for backup on hikes?

Well interesting results and I am sure that if you tweak your 255 swc a bit you will get the same energy as with your mono's.

lets go back and see why mono's were designed, Penetration if i can recall correctly. Your lead bullet usually expands and as a result will slow down and might or might not get to the vitals on your big game, remember the bone factor.

At the end of the day you need to decide what you want the bullet to do because you effectively have 2 bullets with the same energy but your mono will penetrate better even after hitting bone.

So if you want to stop a rabid puppy, lead will be ok.
If you want to stop a peed off charging Pussy Cat, I would definitely go for the Mono.

As to the 300, that all depends on what it hits and how much it expands, deforms i think that the mono might just out penetrate it.

I wonder if there is a way of testing the penetration ability of these bullets.

Just my opinion, and I pray you are never in the situation to have to prove this right or wrong.
