As suggested by the title, im looking fie a shotty. I knOw the usual choices are the 870 n 1300.
How about a semi auto? Im a student so it must be an affordable weapon.

Re: What shotgun to get for IDPA
If money's an issue get a Mossberg. It's a solid workmanlike gun used by many and rarely gives trouble. And it's really not very expensive at all. Sometimes I've seen them go for as low as R1k. Forget the semi-auto. They're great only as long as you still have rounds in the magazine. A pump's ability to load through the ejection port can be a real tactical advantage when needed. If you *have a to have a semi-auto, get a Saiga 12 or go home! :-)

Re: What shotgun to get for IDPA
Afaik the saiga still isn't idpa legal so probably not a good idea to recommend it.
I wouldn't buy a Mossberg personally. Seen too many not work.
The 2 mentioned are the default because they work. A good semi has lots going for it but they do require bigger budgets normally.
WZ beside the saiga which semis can't you load through the port?"But I did discover patience. And it sucks. Mostly for people who have too much time on their hands best as I can tell."

That doesn't make sense. You can load a semi auto through the ejection port aswell. The bolt holds open on empty and can be loaded through the ejection port the same if not quicker than a pump. And you can load to will in the tube as you go through a stage just like with a pump.
My semi auto takes 10 in the tube and one in the chamber. And at any stage during a COF can I load more rounds as needed just like with a pump.

Buy a 1300, readily available and affordable. Job done

Re: What shotgun to get for IDPA
Okay, I stand corrected on the semi side port issue. :-) I am thinking of a gun that ejects through the bottom and not the side. Early morning confusion.
On the Saiga for IDPA, I can only say that many guys in fact shoot them at club shoots and I hear a little bird saying that the new rules will have an open division for shotgun in which they will be legal. But I guess we will see! :-)

PS: You can load the Saiga through the side port. Not as easily as with say a Remington 870 but it can be done, especially with the Saiga's that have the lock back mechanism.

Re: What shotgun to get for IDPA
Saiga 12 will be SADPA legal very soon in the "open" division. The Saiga 12 is a very viable defensive shotgun and therefore should be allowed for DMG in SA. The decision has been taken to allow it for DMG matches.
If you want to stick with a conventional tube fed semi auto shotgun then I can from personal experience recommend the Remington 1100 Tac4 and the Benelli M2 and M4. In this list I will put the M 2 on the top of the list because it is kiss, extremely low maintenace and light.
If I wanted a semi with over riding factors being simplicity, extreme low maintenance, low weight and quality I would put the M2 as my first choice over all the others and that includes the Saiga12.
If I wanted a semi with easiest method of carrying and feeding ammo I would take the Saiga12 with a caveat that it is not always optimal as it comes from the box depending on which model. The 12K I have came with with shit sights and the front sight was misaligned a few degrees to the left resulting in an impossibilty to get the sights zeroed and centered. I replaced the sight set with an aftermarket higher profile sight set and front fiber optic which greatly enhanced the shotgun. Quality is hit and miss mostly. Some Saigas work with all loads of ammo but mine does not - it is reliable only with 32gr plus and it does not feed longer than 70 shells. I have had to do quite a bit of polishing in the feed area of the receiver and chamber rim to get the Saiga to feed 100% reliably.KICK BRASS !!!

Regarding the new rules, will the knoxx spec opps stock with recoil reduction be allowed?

Re: What shotgun to get for IDPA
Imo yes but you will have to compete in the open division.
The OSG/open division will allow shotguns that do not qualify for the SSG or ESG Divisions.KICK BRASS !!!
