    Default Quick question, automatics.

I'm about to head over and get on a plane here and head down to SA. I've packed a Protech automatic w/a 2 1/2 blade in my checked baggage. Will customs down there take it?

No guarantees, but probably not. We do not have any specific knife laws with regard to manner of operation, etc.

Obviously if it is in your carry on luggage it is a different story.

No reason to take it at all. Baggage handling may steal it if your bags are insecure.

Its buried on the bottom inside my shaving kit. Its a Protech Tantilla and its going in a checked back. It doesn't work too well in this environment here so I'm going to keep it w/my things down there.

there is no specific law prohibiting switchblades/automatic opening/etc, like there is in the US, or the lock blade malarky in the UK. in SA its very much up to an LEO's interpretation of your intent if he finds you in possession of any weapon

Actually US laws on autos vary from state to state. They range from very laid back to draconian. Just an FYI for those who ever plan on traveling there.

Like Shark said. The biggest problem isn't customs its the knife being stolen out of your baggage. IMO customs generally wont know the difference between a automatic, lock blade or switch blade.

I have brought plenty of knives from abroad and as long as it is booked in and in your luggage they won't take it. They are too lazy anyway to even make an effort...

Just lock your bags, and wrap them if available.

    No customs problems.
