Re: New wanting to get Dedicated Sport Status
I have set aside money for the training and shooting. So for the petrol, its still expensive, i dont have money set aside for petrol.

I applaud your commitment, but saying money isnt a problem when you're unable to drive from Belville to FH is just crazy. I applied for my DSS today and if I look at total cost to get to this point (just looking at ammo, training, membership, match fees etc et etc), then you might want to increase your budget a bit...
Here's my view from a SADPA DSS perspective:
To get to DSS, ammo alone is about 2000 rounds if you are very conservative and do minimum training and shooting. I also assume you dont own reloading hardware as you dont have a firearm yet, so ammo alone will set you back R6k if you are lucky...the there's match fees of R100/shoot, range fees, equipment cost (althought only a holster and mag pouches are required its still about R500 - R1k)
Sorry for listing some of the negatives, but the reality is that the sport of shooting is extremely expensive, even if you only compete at a beginner level.
That said, I'm addicted to it...every aspect of IDPA is just awesome!

Re: New wanting to get Dedicated Sport Status
I intend to go gradually, so basically spreading it out. All in all, its a big number, but after you spread it out, it becomes more able to cope with. But im 100% sure that i would beable to make it to FH now and then, probably a max of 4 times a month. Plus ive got family that side that I could stay over at. Anyway, thanks for the feedback racingfreak, its much appreciated and i like the honesty. And i wouldnt exactly call those negatives since they are reality. How long did it take you to achieve your DSS?

Re: New wanting to get Dedicated Sport Status
Once a month is plenty.
You need to shoot five events to get twenty points which is what you need per year to maintain DSS. You can do that by shooting twice in FH and twice at Kraaifontein in one month, so effectively you can get DSS in less than two months.
Unless you wait for the start of the year you will have to get someone to specially organise New Shooter Orientation and a Classifier for you, that might be tricky.
So in reality you can have DSS around March next year. In the mean time hang around the club matches, look, LEARN. And bum a gun or ten, figure out what you like. Most guys will let you shoot their gun until you get addicted, then they'll make you pay for the ammo. Shooting is a gateway drug to more shooting.
