    Default AR15 with 22 conversion kit / S&W M&P 15-22?

I just recently got DSS and am now starting to shop around for an SLR to use for IDPA.

I've pretty much made up my mind that my first SLR will be an AR15 variant.

    Do I go for a S&W M&P 15-22?

Or do I go for a rifle chambered for 5.56 and a 22 conversion kit?

If the latter, any recommendations for which rifle and conversion kit to get?

I'm a total NOOB as far as SLRs are concerned any other advice for a first time buyer will also be appreciated...

Get a 223 first. Then you can look at a sub calibre trainer to match it if you want later.

.22 Conversion kit needs to be licenced last I heard??? so for that I would rather get another rifle.

The kits are not optimal if you do not use Black Dog mags imo so you will need to source those as well.

Imo much better to get M&P 15/22 and not having to worry about fouling the upper receiver of your AR 5,56 with rim fire residue all the time.

I had a kit and it worked OK when I used Black Dog mags but the 15/22 is a better option all over imo.

15-22 is cheap enough to just get the rifle itself and definitely worth it too.
with a conversion kit, you'd need to re-zero every time.... no thx.

now people would say "just get a second upper".
fair enough, but that means a 2nd set of optics anyways ($$$) .
and you could then just as well pay like ~20% extra and buy a complete rifle (upper + LOWER).
honestly i dont understand the whole craze about loose/spare uppers.

Followed the same train of thought. 2 rifles are always better than 1. And the M&P15-22 is cheap! My advice is - buy both! Shipment of M&P's landed on Monday as far as I know. Bought mine on Monday, now just to wait for the SLR competency and its license and then it's NEA time...

@Lian & Wesley: Makes sense... I like the M&P because it's cheap to buy and shoot. I.e. lots of trigger time for little $$$s.

@Khumba: Thanks for the info. So now this means I HAVE to own at least two AR15 rifles. I have no problem with that. :)

@BigT & DILLI-GAF: Why do you recommend getting the 223 first?

    Hi Francois

After much research I decided to go with the NEA-15 because of its potential capabilities.

The .223 can be a fairly economical load to reload for, once you have the brass. It's also classed as a minor rifle category for IDPA, and once the .300 blackout is available in SA, I plan on purchasing the upper for my NEA, and then I should be able to shoot with the same rifle and set up, but in the major rifle category for IDPA. Of course having two rifles would be great as well!

Most set ups for optics these days are quick detachable and with good quality mounts should still hold its zero. I am not the expert on this -but I am learning every day!

The .22 insert is bit of a dangerous and grey area. Whilst the insert is not really a barrel or receiver, the possession of the ammo without a .22 licence as well, could get you into trouble. Khumba do you have an opinion about this issue at all?
