Lead for casting bullets?
Can someone tell me where I can source some pure lead and some tin. I am casting my own Mienies and struggling to decent lead...other than old fishing sinkers and or wheel weights. appreciate any help with this.

The non ferrous metal guys should be able to help you, but at a price. Check in you yellow pages, should find them there.

Re: Lead for casting bullets?
I have heard wheel weights as well as cable lead is not pure lead and should not be used in BP rifles.

Wheel weights ok for round ball, cable is softer & ok for connicals.

Re: Lead for casting bullets?
Stick-on type wheelweights and cable lead are perfect for use in muzzle loader conicals.
I use it for anything from the little 110grain .32cal to the 800grain .72 bullets (and almost anything inbetween)
Hard lead I use for roundballs.

Re: Lead for casting bullets?
I have been reliably told (recently) that Castle Lead Works is the only source of pure lead. But I'll be surprised if Fry's metals doesn't have it. Lead and Solder Sales in Bellville is a lead foundry and should also have it, but you'd have to ask. Castle Lead Works price is R53 per kg. That will make the cost of heavy PB projectiles quite steep.

Re: Lead for casting bullets?
I've been using "stick-on" wheelweights for quite some time now for bp bullets.
Works pretty well for all conicals from the little 110grain .32 conical right up to the 810grain conical for the .72
Roundballs can be cast from hard lead but not the ones used in cap/ball rollies. These require soft lead.

Re: Lead for casting bullets?
Just be carefull of wheel weights. I've been told these are made from 'sweepings'; meaning just about everything that can reasonably be called: lead. Lots of nasty poisions I'm told.
