    Shootout at metro chief’s home

File photo: Gunmen have stormed the home of controversial eThekwini metro police chief Eugene Nzama (pictured).

Durban - Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and robbery after a shootout at the home of metro police boss Eugene Nzama on Wednesday.
Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge said early information has revealed that four men allegedly broke into Nzama’s Durban home at 6pm, where they subdued two security guards and took their firearms.
The gunmen then opened fire on the pair of guards, wounding both, one critically.
Mdunge said neither Nzama, nor his family were at the residence at the time.
Numerous calls by IOL to ascertain if Nzama and his family had been removed to a place of safety were not returned.
The metro police boss is at the centre of several controversies with both metro police officers and members of the taxi industry, who have repeatedly called for his axeing.
At the crux of the dispute is the deadlock between the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) and the city leadership over allegations that include maladministration, corruption, nepotism, favouritism and harassment of taxi drivers.
In August, metro police officers staged a protest which saw the Durban city centre gridlocked for several hours.
Samwu and metro police officers who spoke on condition of anonymity said they had further strikes planned - in collaboration with the taxi industry - should their demands for Nzama’s firing, amongst other demands, not be met.
In June, Nzama was put on precautionary suspension, only to come back a month later after taking the city to court. The city has yet to formulate charges against him.- IOL

Johannesburg - One of the men accused of killing two KwaZulu-Natal ANC leaders is a local ANC Youth League branch leader, the party said on Wednesday.
“Sifiso Khumalo is the local branch chairperson of the ANCYL in Port Shepstone,” regional secretary Mzwandile Mkhwanazi said.
Khumalo, 31, pleaded guilty to the murders of Bheki Chiliza and Dumisani Malunga when he appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) regional secretary Mbuso Ngubane said in a statement.
Chiliza was a Numsa Port Shepstone local chairperson and ANC branch secretary, and Malunga an ANC branch chairperson.
Mkhwanazi said Khumalo's co-accused, Samuel Cele, 34, pleaded not guilty and would appear in court again on September 19.
The two were arrested on Monday. Malunga, 42, and Chiliza, 39, were shot dead while driving in the Oshabeni area on Sunday, September 9.
    Numsa welcomed Khumalo's guilty plea.
“What transpired in court this morning has vindicated our long held suspicion that the cold-blooded murders were politically motivated and well-orchestrated from within,” Ngubane said.
He said the murders were triggered by squabbles over positions of power and government perks.
“It is very troubling that comrades can sit and plot, pull a trigger, and kill their own comrades because of self-centred ambitions and obsession with power and positions.” - Sapa

Johannesburg - The man found dead near a group of strikers not far from Lonmin's Marikana mine earlier this week was 51-year-old rock-drill operator and NUM shop steward Dumisani Mthinti, police said on Thursday.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane, who provided his name, said he was from the Eastern Cape.

"He had two open wounds at the back of his head that showed he was hacked with a sharp object."

His body was found on Tuesday, as the strike at the platinum mine entered its second month.

Ngubane said no arrests had yet been made and investigations were still underway into the death.

National Union of Mineworkers spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said Mthinti was an NUM shop steward.

On Tuesday, Ngubane said his body was found about 300m away from where the miners usually met, on the western side of a hill near the mine.

On Wednesday, the SA Council of Churches (SACC) said the workers on strike at Lonmin were not violent.

"As a leader myself, I am convinced that they are not violent," SACC president Bishop Jo Seoka told reporters in Marikana, in the North West.

Asked about the body, Seoka said Mthinti might have been killed elsewhere.

"There is no evidence that workers have murdered anyone, because they don't know what happened. We appealed to workers' delegation[s] to tell workers not to carry dangerous weapons."

Workers were expected to meet mine management, the unions, traditional leaders and the SACC on Thursday to discuss their demand for a monthly salary of R12 500.

Mthinti was the 45th person killed in events associated with the strike since August 10. Ten people, including police and security guards, died in the week before police opened fire on protesters, killing 34 of them on August 16.

A little bit like a self basting chicken. A self reducing political party. Seems like all those stolen firearms are being used.

Julius Malemas ally, Vhembe ANC Youth League regional chairman Rolivhuwa Nelwamondo, believes he was a target of an assassination attempt because of his Friends of the Youth League association.

Johannesburg - Julius Malema’s ally, Vhembe ANC Youth League regional chairman Rolivhuwa Nelwamondo, believes he was a target of an assassination attempt because of his Friends of the Youth League association.
Days after organising buses to ferry people from the region to a night vigil in Polokwane in support of Malema, four armed men forced their way into his family home at Makwarele, Thohoyandou, and sprayed bullets into the living room.
The walls were left with holes, and used bullet cartridges were left scattered on the floor.
Nelwamondo said on Wednesday his younger brother had escaped unhurt after the assailants interrogated him about his whereabouts.
Nelwamondo’s other younger brother was forced to lie down and had his body pressed against the floor with feet before the “Pedi-speaking” men left, he said. Nobody was hurt, he added.
Nelwamondo, who said he believed the incident was politically motivated, has laid criminal charges.
“I think it is politics because we were busy organising buses for people to come to support Julius. I opened a case on Tuesday of attempted murder and housebreaking,” he said.
Nelwamondo is the parliamentary officer in Limpopo Economic Development MEC Pinky Kekana’s office. He is close to Malema.
Nelwamondo said he had been attending a regional ANC meeting at the Vhembe district offices on Tuesday evening when he realised he had missed calls from one of his younger brothers. When he returned the call at around 7pm, he was told to rush home.
Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said they were investigating two counts of attempted murder.
