Hunting with short barrel revolver
Hi Guys. Please, PLEASE don't take this the wrong way. I'm very inquisitive and enjoy a discussion. According to the Firearms act of SA,a revolver may be licenced under a hunting firearm of the barrel is longer than 6 inches. I don't have the act in front of me but I think it's 6 inches, I can't remember if calibre is also a criteria. Now, is it illegal/unethical to hunt with a short barrel d revolver ? Let's say I'm a good shot with a 4 " .357 and capable of stalking small antelope eg. Impala within 20 meters. Your opinions are welcome.

Re: Hunting with short barrel revolver
I can think of no reference in the FCA to a barrel length limit for hunting.
Cattle die, kindred die, every man is mortal:
But I know one thing that never dies,
the glory of the great dead.

I think you are confusing association requirments with the act.

I think this is the effective version. Section 5 says 100mm, so you should be fine with a 4 inch barrel because it should be 101.6mm (25.4x4).
You would still need a proper hunting bullet and need to stalk as close as possible.

Re: Hunting with short barrel revolver
I've sucessfully hunted fallow deer with a 4" barreled .357 revolver. The key is practise, lots of it and from realistic field positions. A 4" barrel will give you all the accuracy you need for hunting out to a maximum of 100m but I prefer to keep my shots to <50m.

Re: Hunting with short barrel revolver
Like a 2 inch Barrel? You'd be outside the regulations.
Theoretically if the bullet has enough energy to reach and destroy the vitals and you can place it there, why not?
