Default .44 Mag 300 Grain cast

Well Guys I eventually collected my mould, that is for the 300 gr Bullet, Cast a few this evening and they don't seem to bad at all, lubed up they wheigh in at 304 grains . As you can see it is placed next to a 245gr cast, and it seats to the same depth as the 245, luckily the BlackHawks cylinder is sufficiently long enough so that when loaded like this the revolver still functions like it should. Now what to do with all the extra space as opposed to a normal seating depth for a 300 gr bullet, was thinking of starting at around 17 or 18 grains of S265 and take it from there. Any ideas will be welcome.

    Cheers

The mould I picked up second hand, it is made by NEI,I dropped them a mail and they indicated that this mold was made by them but dont have to much other info , I will however pop them a Photo as well and see what they come up with, i bought the mould because of the 2 crimp grooves and that worked out well.

GC I assume = Gas Checks. No I dont have a problem using them, the only problem being that they are very expensive here and availability is also a problem, the last local pice I had was 1049.00 ZAR per 1000. I have however found a supplier in the US that will ship to me, the cost beeing arround 500-550 ZAR landed, I need to get some as I have 2 other .44 Mag moulds and a .357 180 gr mould that takes them. Just wish I can get my hands on a can or 6 of H110, Now that would be the business.

    Cheers

NEI is a highly reputed brand.

Burner, I echo what KK said, NEI are really nice moulds.

Very nice looking bullets by the way! What alloy are you using - wheel weights? Hardened with extra antimony?

I would think that 17grn S265 is a good place to start, I would also appreciate you sharing your velocity data if you dont mind.

I am very keen to get hold of some 300+grn bullets. I also have a mould for GC bullets (250grn Keith type SWC - like your 245s - made by Lyman) - I have not been having much joy sourcing GCs here, so if you are happy to do a group buy, I would like to add 2k (of GCs) to your order(?). Let me know.

A comment on KK's question - I think that GCs are less necessary at the lower velocities (read here = heavier bullets). Most of the Yank authors seem to hunt with heavy for cal, plain base (PB on their forums) bullets.

Happy shooting with that wheel gun!

Sweet, comment on the GC is true . i prefer working with them as the finished product is neater and seats better

Sweet I have just been using wheel weights, then drop the bullets from the mold into cold water, as of yet I have had no issues with leading at all, even the 245 gr bullets that i cast and pushed to arround 1300 fps have shown no signs of leading. Oh yes , i size .430.

One day when I get hold of a .44 mag barrel for my TC I will probably have to go the GC route, and yes sure when I order again, probably early in the new year i will gladly include a box or so for yourself.

Right spent the day on the range today and here is some feedback on the 300 Grain cast boolits as per my OP:

    Cases Winchester
    Primers Winchester

    17 Grains S265,

    1113
    1133

Will neen a heavier crimp on these because I had some creep on the bullets and due to the fact that they are the same length as the Rugers Cylinder the slightest bit of creep and problems.

    17.5 Grains S265

    1145
    1163
    1132
    1120
    1150

THese I fired individually so as to prevent the creep, there were no signs of pressure, primers nice and round , no sticky cases.

I will continue to play with this one and see where I end up, will try 18 and then 18.5 but I think that 1200fps will be my limit, as i feel that it is more than enough for a 300 grain bullet, comments here will be great.

Case capacity is not an issue as it seats to the same deapth as a 245 grain Keath bullet.

PLease note same disclaimer applies, use at you own risk,
