POLICE LOST 740 GUNS THIS YEAR

JOHANNESBURG – The national police commissioner’s office yesterday revealed that 740 firearms were either stolen or lost by police officers during the last financial year.
They listed incidents including that six guns had been lost in toilets, which were part of the grand total of 246 missing firearms listed under negligent loss.
It also announced that there were 286 guns that were yet to be classified.
Altogether, 352 guns were lost through police negligence and 388 firearms were lost which were classified as “bona fide”.
In terms of negligent losses:
• One policeman lost his gun while drunk;
• Four guns were stolen in robberies while police were drinking;
• Ten firearms were stolen in burglaries in homes that were not locked;
• Sixteen firearms were stolen out of state vehicles;
• Twenty-two weapons were stolen from police officers in person;
• Twenty-nine were stolen out of private vehicles;
• Eighteen guns were stolen from dwellings.
The commissioner’s office also said that 425 investigations were still pending into the disappearance of weapons from police armouries and shift handovers.
A total 350 police officers were disciplined for the loss of weapons.

Eish , some more tooling for the criminals ,I wonder out of all the firearms lost ,how many cops were brought to book.

Lost in toilets? As in "Eish! I flushed it down by mistake" ? Conveniently enough that's the excuse a jewelry polisher used 3 weeks ago when a R650k gold necklace went missing in a shop...

I'd be quite interested in the definitions what classifies as "bona fide" and non. Is this just SAPS or metros inclusive? Assuming only SAPS... also wondering how many "bona fide assault rifles" went missing.
