Why the long-gun registry doesn’t work — and never did

Keep in mind that the Restricted and Prohibited registries are still intact, as is the ATT system, licencing, transport regulations, arbitrarily prohibited firearms, etc. So much for focusing on criminals... The long-gun registry is really a bone thrown to the majority constituency of the Conservative party.

Also note that law-abiding firearms owners are "farmers and hunters" - self-defence is not a reason to own a firearm in Canada. I am slightly surprised that he did not even mention sport shooters.

I mention these things to check the boundless optimism about Canada's repealing the LGR that seems to be prevalent. Why does the long-gun registry "not work", but the other registries do and all the other random regulations?
