    Default Buying a new rifle?!?

    Hi Everyone,

As stated in my newbie post, I'm in the market for a new rifle, specifically a .30-06, budget around R15k for rifle, excl. scope. But I'm at a complete loss as to which one to buy. I have visited some of the gun shops around Cape Town this week and at each shop a different brand is said to be the best buy for my budget. Where to now? I want the rifle purely for hunting. I already have a .223 Brno for Springbok and Rooibok. The .30-06 would be for the bigger game.

At this stage from what I've seen, I'm buying a new Musgrave. My reasoning: Strong/reliable action, solid barrel and beautiful stock.

    Any advice or opinions?

I would personally go for a musgrave as I and all my family own a few.

    Also look at the tikka.

I would not consider the new Musgrave rifles if I were you. I have seen too many brand new custom build rifles of theirs in need of repair. I even saw a new .375 from Musgrave which had its sights soldered on instead of fixed onto the barrel with screws.

Best value for money with your budget is a CZ. Needs a bit of work here and there but nothing extreme.

    Good luck and enjoy.

Not a fan of the plastic mag on the Tikka's or the stock. Action very smooth though.

Would consider the CZ 550 with the American stock, but the slanted stock doesn't feel right. Is the American stock available in SA?

    Hi Sfourie,

Could you please expand a bit on the needs a bit of work part. I want to buy new, specifically because I don't want to "upgrade/improve".

    Regards

Not too confident the American is available. Andrew Leigh wanted one in 6.5x55, but had to order especially from the agents and there were some issues.

    Its minor work.

The angles on the sights and on the bolt are very sharp. Many people prefer to have these rounded. Ofcourse with a 30-06 you can discard the sights completely and should you choose to have the sharp angles rounded on the bolt you can simply reblue the bolt for very little cost.

The triggers on some of the new CZ’s I have fired are a nightmare. They have multiple creep stages. Replace with a Thor trigger for +- R750.

The safety on the CZ550 tend to get in the way when you cycle the action in the open handed fashion. When cycled in this fashion at speed, you can accidentally engage the safety. Simply have a gunsmith shorten it. Also a small cost job.

    That is it.

    Regards
