And still they continue.
Bloemfontein - A well-known farmer from Villiers in the Free State is fighting for his life after he and his wife were attacked on their farm.
Jannie du Plessis, 64, and his wife Stinnie, 59, were attacked by robbers in their bedroom on Sunday night.
He was shot in the stomach and both were locked in their safe for several hours before being rescued.
The farmer’s brother, Johan du Plessis, said a miracle would have to happen for his brother to survive, reported Volksblad.
Du Plessis said one of his brother’s kidneys had to be removed but due to the heavy internal bleeding an operation and even dialysis treatment had not been possible.
His brother’s small intestine was also damaged. Du Plessis was receiving blood transfusions and also had diminished heart capacity due to three heart attacks he had suffered in the past.
“[Strictly] speaking he doesn’t stand a chance. We will need a miracle,” said his brother, who added that they were trying to remain positive.
Stinnie du Plessis was said to be badly traumatised by the incident and was struggling to cope.
The couple has two sons.
A farm union representative said the senseless attack on one of the community’s most prominent farmers had come as a shock to many.Last edited by camouflage762; 15-01-2013 at 13:09. Reason: link

Very sad indeed. I always ask myself why didnt they have enough time to defend themselves, did they had dogs, did they had a alarm, did they had weapons??? etc.etc. But unfortunately the law protect the intruder more than the victim. Was anything stolen? I bet nothing was stolen or small stuff. They just came to kill the farmer thats all.

Re: Farm Attacks - 2013
And still the majority of farmers don't worry about their safety.

Re: Farm Attacks - 2013
Another sad story, another statistic. My prayers are with the Du Plessis couple and family.

I haven't done a formal study so i cant provide stats for you. I personally know many farmers in many different communities and have spoken to others in farming communities where the majority of farmers dont bother with their own safety. Its a case of it wont happen to us attitude.
If your farming community is different then well done to you all.

Re: Farm Attacks - 2013
Yup, generalisations can serve to trivialise an issue which many don't treat as trivial.
We, in my community, have been fortunate in the recent past, but incidents such as these, at the very least, should serve as a reminder.
Anecdotally, 'cause I don't have the stats to prove it, the impression that victims are mostly elderly may indicate that they are targeted not because they are ignorant but because they pose less of a physical threat.
