Default Re: My 270 is dying - where to now?

Thanks Deon - Woods makes a lot of sense in his article until he starts putting calibers to his categories. But then true to Magnum style they are extremely conservative and cover themsleves nicley with massive margins for error. The 7 x 57 for example is too much gun for any Eland and he knows this too - a 160gr Rhino in 7 x 57 or 7 x 64 will be more than enough to do the job admirably. Your comments on 30 cal is good sense - I am enquiring about a 30-06 and a 7 x 64 at the moment but might just buy another 270. I am yet to find any animals in the class that I hunt that cannot be very successfully taken with a 270 - even small to medium Eland! (Who can afford an Eland nowadays?) Thanks for the thought you have put into this - I appreciate it! I have a 308 in a gunshop safe for safekeeping until my oldest turns 21 in 5 years time so I do not really want to mess with it. I would rather replace what I have and do my own thing. I am checking the 270 out tomorrow with a knowledgable friend and then we will see BUT I think it is all over. My last 4 hunts have been a disaster with the 270 despite trying everything i know from changing the scope to scrubbing the barrel, re assessing my loads and also checking all screws etc. I stuck a borescope down the barrel a few months ago and we saw "crazy cracking" in the barrel. I am told this is bad and I have a feeling this is the problem.

Ok so I am a D@@S!! I put it out there and wait for nodding glances and wry smiles! I decided to recheck the action and contrary to what I have been told I discovered the following:
There is no makers mark for Savage on the action.
The action is clearly marked with the following

    J.G.Anschutz GmbH Ulm/D West Germany
    The barrel has the following:

    Anschutz-Mod 1568 Cal. 270 Win
It appears as if the whole rifle is an Anschutz product. Quite a heavy caliber for a company renowned for .22 and .222

I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I DID NOT CHECK THIS BEFORE SO PLEASE POINT FINGERS AND LAUGH AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE BUT DO NOT ASK WHY!!!! Dosy me idf24

There are NO OTHER MARKS on the action at all. I have to believe that it is an Anschutz action and therefore a very accurate one. I therefore have to believe that the problem lies with the barrel. Ikor - thanks for your trouble but I wasted your time. I owe you a beer one day.

Does anyone know anything about the Anschutz action and how can I go about rebarreling?

If my .22 Anschutz is any thing to go by then your .270 action should be 1st class. Find out about rebarreling it, it may be the more worth while option.

After searching the net for a while I finally found a reliable reference to the 270 Win Anschutz mod 1568 and wait for it - it is built on a Krico 700 action. I know nothing about this action. Who can help?

Well, here is the KRICO factory website...in German...maybe they can assist you, Also the Anschutz site (apparently they had to add the 'e' in the name because some clown grabbed the original first in hopes of getting big money from them for it) ...try some emails maybe?

Thanks Guys - I am hearing that the Krico and Anschutz factories are quite close together and that the Krico 700 is a very good action. I will post if I hear anything more but I am now heading for rebarreling.
