Default Feral Pig Hunting... with a crossbow

So while I wait for my rifle licence to be granted, I've been tasked with ridding a farm of feral pigs -- these guys are eating the farmers vegetable crops that are used for restaurants in the Cape Town area.

Now I've read a couple threads here and understand that they are no pushover and are aggressive as they come, and are equipped with their very own weapons to boot!

I use the Excalibur Ibex (don't like compound bows, they're fine for target shooting, but for hunting, nothing beats a recurve) which is more than up to the task, and I can attest to it's stopping power -- the broadhead arrows will do more damage than a bullet.

We will be taking along the requisite knives (Cold Steel Cutlass Machete, etc.) and some extra tough boots.

So anyone have any tips or comments for a first time pig hunt?
What to do, what not to do?

Ask a friend with a firearm to join you as backup. I have a firearm. I can stand at your rear with it.

I kid. Just be careful. Pigs are bastardly things. If it falls, leave it there or shoot it again to ensure that it really is dead. They're tough, often lie down after being hit and then get back up after they've slept for a while.

Yeah that would be the perfect scenario, but won't have that luxury this weekend I'm afraid...

So to sum up, your advice would be to find the nearest tree after taking the shot

My tip: use the wind..their sence of smell is excellent.

Tip2: Trailcams would help you work out what their movement patterns are.

And their hearing. If the pig stops to listen, don't make a sound.

To be honest, you need backup with a rifle. Preferably a shotgun. Going tusk to toe armed with a knife against a pissed off and wounded pig is going to suck for you.

That's why I'm asking for tips

But seriously, I'm actually looking forward to the challenge.

There will be two of us on the hunt, so it's not like I'm alone. Extra protection for the area below the knees, and some extremely sharp and deadly blades (first option is to spear the pig, ie. as it runs toward you, you spear it, using it's own momentum against it) and we should come out alive.

Don't forget a quick reload with the bow is first choice though, before getting anywhere near those tusks.

To be honest though, they are called broadheads for a reason. If you get a decent hit with, I don't think the pig will offer much of a problem to finish off.

Pigs hear like a mothertrucker!! Be very very quiet (now try and get the Elmar Fudd voice out of your head).
